BLAST

The group Blast had it's founding in 1989 and so exists for about 15 years. As can be expected, the line up and musical focus changed quite a bit during that years. The group went through a musical development from highly complex composed art-rock to a much more open style that combines elements out of new music with improvisation. Since three years we play as a fixed quartet that can be extended with guest musicians according to what a project requires. At the moment we play as a quintet, sextet and in combination with a twelve piece chamber music ensemble next to the quartet version. What didn't change is that we still operate internationally and have openness for musical challenge. In april 2003 the fifth Blast CD had it's release. The album is titled "Altrastrata" and is out on the "Recommended Records" label of Chris Cutler.

With the quartet we work on music in which composition and improvisation are integrated in each other as much as possible. To achieve this, we work on the development of new ways of notation and interplay. A way of playing in which time is used with an outmost flexibility and where the players are conductors at the same time. In the scores we make use of notation techniques such as graphical writing, polymetrics, free choice of parameters, etc. All that in order to make less harsh transitions between the improvised and composed material and creating a coherent sound. We add a new dimension by using electronics and electro-acoustics, amplified objects and sound deformation. The range of dynamics becomes wider and the tension between abstract and tonal music is more emphasized. Since we fairly extend the possibilities, the program is renewing itself all the time and no piece will sound two times the same.

The quintet Joined by the Turkish/Kazakh singer Saadet Tuerkoez, Blast is playing a program of fully improvised music. Saadet's music is a fusion of modern vocal techniques with those out of the Turkish/Mongolian music tradition. She will be in dialogue with the abstract and dissonant sounds of Blast. This combination makes an obstinate music with moments of raw expression and those of refined lyrical quality. A lot of times Saadet uses fragments of songs from her culture that get new shape by means of language and music deconstruction. At the moment there are plans to reinforce this quintet with guest appearances. On an upcoming occasion we are going to work with cellist Martin Schuetz.

The sextet In this formation we've added voice and trombone to the quartet. We will be working with the singer Jana Mishenina and trombonist Christophe Schweizer. With this line up the accent lies more on composition and structure but there are improvised passages within the pieces in which we base ourselves on the written material. Within the music we use a lot of special playing techniques and instrument preparations in order to create strong atmospheres. The main starting point for the pieces are the texts, which are taken out of the modern literature and especially poetry. Kenneth Patchen, Hans Magnus Enzensberger and Stefan Themerson are some of the poets we used texts of. We selected these texts on musical qualities as rhythm and phrasing. Their content mostly has an absurd tendency with veiled social criticism. The vocals have a leading role as can be expected. They are ranging from melodic lines to experimental forms of speech. Earlier we have worked with the singer Hester Boverhuis and trombonist Joost Buis.

Blast with the Spectra Ensemble

The new music festival novembermusic (NL,B,G) commissioned Frank Crijns and Dirk Bruinsma to write for chamber music ensemble plus quartet of improvisers for the festival's 2003 edition. This resulted in two 25 minutes pieces of a music that blends achievements in new music with those out of contemporary improvised music. The Spectra Ensemble is based in the city of Gent, Belgium and is specialized in performing contemporary composed music.

Frank Crijns and Dirk Bruinsma were commissioned by The Dutch Composers Fund to write for the quartet, the sextet and the Spectra Ensemble.
