THE INSTRUMENT

2nd line is an interactive percussive/dance system, designed and constructed by artist
STEVE BUCHANAN. Capable of representing any known percussion instrument
(from tabla to techno) it also has full image control capability: VHS, DVC, DVD, USB,
multiple projections and of course all manner of stage lighting, both traditional and non.
The dynamic and innovative solo presentation of Steve Buchanan, occurs, concurs and
collides within the univers of this unique system, the nature of which allows for a
true and exciting meeting between music and dance.


THE SHOW

By defying and redefining the perceptual boundaries of music and dance; and seeking
their similarities rather than differences, the artist skillfully bridges the gap
between the two disciplines. This work explores impulse and response, relative towards
the intellectual and emotional sensibilities of both performer and spectator. Utilizing
basic elements (music, dance, language; above all rhythm) the artist creates a powerful
and sensuous environment densely structured polyrhythms, mimetic movement and language
soundscape combine to create a compelling ritualistic ambience which is equally at home
in both dance / performing arts or musical venues.
